Species: Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast, and has been originally isolated from the skin of grapes . It is one of the most intensively studied eukaryotic model organisms in molecular and cell biology. This organism is also important in industry, where been used to make bread, beer, wine, enzymes, and pharmaceuticals. S. cerevisiae cells are round to ovoid, 5–10 μm in diameter, reproduces by budding. S. cerevisiae was the first eukaryotic genome to be completely sequenced, and is composed of 12 156 677 base pairs and 6275 genes organized on 16 chromosomes.
